Concreted Alfresco and Entertainment Areas in Morningside
An alfresco pad or outdoor entertaining area is one of the most-used concrete pours we do across Morningside and the Inner East. It sounds simple enough, but getting it right involves more steps than most homeowners expect.
What the Work Actually Involves
We start with site prep: clearing the area, cutting back any roots that could lift the slab later, and excavating to the right depth (typically 100mm for a residential entertaining pad). From there we form up the edges, compact the sub-base, and lay steel reinforcement mesh or bar depending on the load requirements and soil conditions.
The concrete itself is delivered by agitator truck for most jobs. We place, screed, and finish it to a flat, even surface. The finish type depends on what you want and what suits the space. Common choices include:
- Broom finish - practical, non-slip, cost-effective
- Exposed aggregate - popular in Hawthorne and Balmoral, works well with older Queenslander gardens
- Honed or polished - smoother, suits more modern homes in Bulimba and Cannon Hill
- Stencilled or pattern imprinted - decorative, adds visual interest but costs more and takes longer
We factor in falls (drainage slope) during the pour so water runs away from the house rather than sitting under the back door. In Brisbane's climate, getting that detail right matters.
Curing takes around 28 days for full strength, but you can typically use the area for foot traffic within a few days.
When Do You Actually Need This?
Most jobs we see come from one of a few situations:
- You're adding a patio or pergola and need a level concrete base for it
- Your existing back area is bare dirt, pavers that have shifted, or cracked concrete from tree roots
- You're extending an existing slab to fit a bigger outdoor setting or a built-in BBQ
- You've just bought a place in Norman Park or Tingalpa with no real outdoor entertaining space and want to fix that before summer
There's no strict season for pouring concrete in Brisbane, but very hot days (35°C+) can cause the surface to dry too fast if it's not managed well. We avoid pours in direct afternoon sun during peak summer where possible, or take steps to shade and cure the slab properly. Autumn and winter are comfortable working conditions and generally fine for scheduling.
What Does It Cost?
For a straightforward entertaining pad in Morningside or surrounds, typical pricing runs roughly $100 to $150 per square metre for a basic broom-finished slab. That puts a 25sqm pad somewhere in the range of $2,500 to $3,750 as a rough guide.
Prices move based on:
- Size and shape - curves and irregular edges take longer to form
- Access - difficult rear-yard access in Morningside's narrower blocks can add cost for equipment and manual wheeling
- Finish type - exposed aggregate and stencilled finishes cost more than broom
- Ground conditions - if there's significant excavation, rocky ground, or old roots to remove, expect to pay more
- Reinforcement spec - heavier mesh or rebar for larger spans adds material cost
What's Included in Our Quote vs What's Extra
A quote from us for an alfresco pad typically covers:
- Site prep and excavation (to standard depth)
- Formwork and reinforcement mesh
- Concrete supply and pour
- Nominated finish (broom, aggregate, etc.)
- Basic drainage fall built into the slab
What can add to the price or require a separate line item:
- Tree root removal or stump grinding (that's a separate trade)
- Retaining or edging if the yard has a level change
- Demolition of an existing slab or pavers
- Permit requirements (unusual for a basic pad, but worth confirming with Brisbane City Council if your project is large or attached to a structure)
We'll go through all of this before you sign anything.
Is This the Right Service for Your Property?
A concreted slab suits most Brisbane backyards as a base for outdoor entertaining. It's particularly practical in areas like Murarrie and Tingalpa where yards tend to be larger and a hard-wearing surface makes sense over pavers, which can shift in Queensland's clay soils.
If your backyard is heavily sloped, you may also need a retaining wall footing or some earthworks before a slab makes sense. We can advise on that during a site visit.
A Note on Safety and Qualifications
Concrete work in Queensland doesn't require a separate licence the way some trades do, but the quality of the outcome depends heavily on experience, particularly around reinforcement placement, drainage falls, and finishing. We carry public liability insurance covering our work on your property. If you're having a structure built over the slab (a pergola or roofed alfresco), you may need a building approval from Brisbane City Council - your builder or certifier handles that side, not us.
If you're comparing quotes, ask each contractor what mesh spec they use, how they handle drainage falls, and whether concrete supply is included. Those three questions will tell you a lot.
We work across Morningside, Norman Park, Hawthorne, Bulimba, Balmoral, Cannon Hill, Murarrie, and Tingalpa. If you'd like to talk through what your backyard needs before committing to anything, give us a call and we can arrange a time to take a look.
