The Inner East is full of character homes sitting on blocks that were subdivided decades ago. That history creates real concreting demands.

Older slabs crack and shift. Many post-war homes in Cannon Hill and Morningside still have their original concrete driveways from the 1960s or 70s. After 50-plus years of Brisbane summers, tree root movement and heavy vehicle loads, those slabs often show significant cracking, subsidence or surface spalling. Replacing them properly means removing the old slab, preparing the base correctly and pouring fresh concrete with the right reinforcement.

Queensland summers are hard on concrete. Hot, fast-drying conditions in Brisbane mean concrete can cure unevenly if it isn't placed and finished by someone who knows what they're doing in the heat. Cracking and surface crazing are the usual results when curing is rushed or poorly managed.

Sloped blocks in Balmoral and Hawthorne. Many Inner East properties sit on sloping ground. That means retaining wall footings and base pours are a regular part of the work here, alongside driveways and alfresco slabs. Getting the drainage fall right on a sloped slab is not optional.

What a Proper Concreting Job Actually Involves

Good concrete work starts well before the truck arrives. We excavate or cut away the existing surface, compact the sub-base properly and form up the edges. For driveways and garage slabs, we lay reinforcing steel mesh or reo bar to suit the load rating. For pool surrounds and alfresco areas, we factor in the finished surface texture so the result is non-slip and comfortable underfoot in bare feet.

When the concrete is poured, timing and technique matter. We finish the surface at the right stage of set, apply expansion joints where they're needed to control cracking, and manage curing to suit the weather on the day. A slab poured without control joints in a Brisbane summer is likely to crack within a year.

We use a concrete pump where access is tight, which is common on narrow suburban blocks in Hawthorne and Bulimba. Wheelbarrow runs and pump hire both affect cost, so we factor that into the quote upfront.

Honest Pricing for Concreting in Morningside

Three things move a quote significantly:

If you're planning an alfresco slab or a new driveway, avoid pouring in the middle of a Brisbane heatwave if you can help it. Autumn and winter are typically the better seasons here for outdoor concrete work. The slower curing in cooler conditions usually gives a better result.

Also, if your home is on timber stumps (common in older Morningside and Norman Park Queenslanders), check with your concretor about drainage paths before pouring a large slab adjacent to the house. Blocking stormwater flow under a Queenslander can cause problems that go well beyond the concrete itself.
