Non-Slip Concrete Pool Surrounds for Morningside Backyards
An in-ground pool is a real asset in a Brisbane backyard, but the concrete around it does serious work. It takes barefoot traffic all summer, sits in direct sun for hours, gets splashed constantly, and needs to handle Queensland downpours without becoming a slip hazard. Getting that surround right from the start saves you money and headaches later.
We pour and finish pool surrounds for homes across Morningside, Hawthorne, Bulimba, Balmoral and the surrounding Inner East suburbs. Here's what that actually involves.
What the Work Involves
A pool surround job typically starts with excavation or preparation of the area around the pool shell. We form up the edges, lay a compacted base, and set reinforcing steel (reo mesh or bar, depending on the area and expected load). Then we pour the concrete and apply the finish.
The finish is the most important decision. Around a pool, the surface needs to be slip-resistant when wet, comfortable underfoot, and able to handle UV and chlorinated water without deteriorating quickly. Common options include:
- Exposed aggregate - a rough, textured surface that gives good grip. Popular in Morningside and Hawthorne. The aggregate is seeded or included in the mix, and the top cream layer is washed off before it cures.
- Broom finish - the most affordable option. A stiff-bristled broom drags across the wet concrete to create a lined texture. Functional and clean-looking.
- Honed or brushed concrete - smoother and more refined, but still textured enough for pool use if sealed correctly. Better suited to a modern alfresco aesthetic.
We avoid plain trowelled finishes around pools. They look clean when dry but become dangerously slick when wet.
Expansion joints are cut into the slab at regular intervals. This is not optional near a pool - concrete moves with temperature changes, and without joints it will crack on its own terms rather than yours.
When Does a Morningside Home Need This Work?
You're probably at the point of needing this service if:
- You're installing a new in-ground pool and need the surrounding area concreted
- Your existing pool surround is cracked, lifting, or has sections that have settled unevenly
- The current surface has become slippery (algae growth in the texture, worn sealer, or a finish that was never right for poolside use)
- You're renovating the backyard and the old surround doesn't match the new layout
In Brisbane, most pool surround work happens between autumn and spring, when the ground is drier and curing conditions are more consistent. Pouring in the middle of a January heatwave isn't ideal - concrete can cure too fast on the surface and crack. That said, we manage curing conditions with shade cloth and water curing where needed, so it's not a hard stop in summer.
What It Costs in Brisbane
For a typical residential pool surround in the Inner East, expect to pay somewhere between $4,000 and $10,000 for a complete job. Most standard backyard pools in this range sit around $5,000 to $7,000 once you factor in preparation, concrete, steel, formwork and finishing.
What pushes the price up:
- Larger or irregular pool shapes requiring more formwork labour
- Limited access to the backyard (tight side gates are common on older Morningside and Norman Park blocks)
- Tree roots near the area that need cutting back or working around
- Significant re-levelling or base work needed
- Premium finishes like exposed aggregate with a specific stone blend
What can bring it down:
- A straightforward rectangular pool with easy rear access
- Simple broom finish
- No existing concrete to break out and remove
What's Included in Our Quote
A standard quote includes:
- Site visit and measurements
- Formwork, steel reinforcing and concrete supply
- Placement, finishing and joint cutting
- Basic site clean-up
What typically costs extra:
- Breaking out and removing old concrete (usually priced per square metre or per cubic metre of waste)
- Root or debris removal
- Retaining or boxing around a pool that sits on a sloped block (common in Balmoral and Bulimba)
- Sealing, if you want a penetrating or surface sealer applied after curing
We'll always itemise these separately so you're not guessing what's in the number.
Is This the Right Service for Your Property?
Concrete pool surrounds suit most standard in-ground pools on suburban Brisbane blocks. If your pool is fibreglass or concrete shell, the surround material is independent - we're working on the ground around the pool, not the pool itself.
If your backyard has a significant slope or the pool sits on cut-and-fill ground, we'd look at whether retaining wall footings are needed before the surround is poured. That's a separate scope, but we'll flag it honestly if we see it during the site visit.
Timber decking is the main alternative to concrete. Concrete tends to be more durable long-term, lower maintenance, and better value per square metre for most standard jobs. Timber looks good but needs regular oiling or sealing in a Queensland climate, and it can harbour algae in shaded spots.
A Note on Safety and Licensing
In Queensland, concreting work on residential properties is covered under the QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Commission) licensing framework. We hold the appropriate licence for this work. For any job over $3,300 (including labour and materials), your contractor is legally required to hold a current QBCC licence. It's worth asking for that licence number before any work starts, regardless of who you use.
